Clare Molloy & Susanne Sachsse
A Talk, a Window and Sound
Clare Molloy & Susanne Sachsse
Saturday, 08.02.2025, 4 PM
As the second event in the DIFFRACTIONS programme on contemporary testimony, curator Clare Molloy and artist and performer Susanne Sachsse invite you to gather at a location near Kunst Raum Mitte. From there, personal stories will be told about the history of the Scheunenviertel.
In a wintery window in Berlin-Mitte, a talk and sound: on Saturday February 8th, Susanne Sachsse will be in conversation with Clare Molloy, sharing queer feminist musings on Sachsse’s journey from actor in East Berlin to her current practice as a boundary pushing artist and performer.
Moving to the divided capital in the 1980s, Susanne Sachsse graduated from the Hochschuhle für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch and went on to work as an actor at the Berliner Ensemble. As part of theatre’s ensemble, she worked with some era-defining theatre makers including Einar Schleef, Heiner Müller and Robert Wilson. The talk traces her unique insights into performance, theatre and strategies from Berlin’s underground for both deflecting censorship and taking risks. In the year 2000, Sachsse left the ensemble, giving space to her own creative practice and projects. The artist hasn’t looked back since. But for one late afternoon, a moment will be taken to do just that.
A talk, a window and sound is a rare and intimate talk that shares insights into Sachsse’s personal archive, her experiences of working in collectives and the way that exhibitions have grown to be a key focus of her artistic expression.
As part of the DIFFRACTIONS—Collecting & Un/Learning programme, Kunstraum Mitte invites people with lived experience of East Berlin to share their perspectives in spaces around the Scheunenviertel. This series celebrates a diverse polyphony of voices. Susanne Sachsse is a queer icon, a grounded artistic force and a voice of integrity in the ever changing cultural landscape of Berlin.
