Lola von der Gracht

Lola von der Gracht is an interdisciplinary artist. Her collages, installations and performances reflect identity, gender and belonging. The works combine photography, drawing and poetry to create fragmentary narratives that interweave personal experiences with collective memory and thus create space for reflection and the questioning of social norms. Often presented in public spaces, her art makes queer history visible and accessible. Lola von der Gracht is also the singer of the indie punk band NIP SLIP, with whom she performs internationally.

NIP SLIP’s founding members Lola von der Gracht & Alex Mara have been on stage together since 2018.  With various projects they have played locally at Berghain, Musikbrauerei, Schinkel Pavillon, Ballhaus Berlin, Volksbühne, Planetarium, Ringlokschuppen Mülheim an der Ruhr, POP Kudamm and internationally at Ssense (Montréal, Canada), Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London (UK), The Scotch of St. James, London (UK) and De Studio, Antwerp (BE).

They have been described as a fusion of experimental band and innovative art project. The bands nonconformist attitudes feature in Lola von der Gracht’s provocative lyrics, thematizing subjects such as rebellion, death, love, freedom, addiction, hope and identity.

With their former project „Die Hässlichen Vögel“ von der Gracht & Mara have been featured in Interview Magazine US (2019), Süddeutsche Zeitung (2019), taz (2020), Vogue Germany (2021) and Vogue US (2021).

Their music has been described as „floating between cavernous baroque to the driving punk that could have found itself at CBGB’s in New York’s underground heyday“ (Phil Backes, Document Journal), further likening them to New Wave and Riot Girl movement.
